Wigan Athletic Community Trust: Pathway 2 Participation

Funded by the National Lottery Fund and Wigan Council since 2016 the Pathway 2 Participation scheme provides mentoring support to 120 of the most vulnerable children and young people in Wigan each year.

The programmes aims to help the young people to:

  • Improve their confidence
  • Improve their physical health
  • Improve their mental well-being
  • Be more engaged in community activities through social action

It achieves this through a combination of group work and activities as well as one-to-one support, sometimes working with a young person for up to 12 months.

Since April 2021 it has achieved the following outcomes:

Improve participants’ confidence: 97% of participants acknowledge an improvement in their confidence with an average of a 19% increase.

Improve physical health: 63% of participants show an improvement in physical health with 37% remaining at the same level.

Improve their mental well-being: 25% of participants improved their mental health with 70% maintaining their levels of mental health. For those that improved their mental health, there was an 8% increase from the start of the 12-weeks to the end

Be more engaged in community activities – 35% of participants said they care more about their community because of taking part.
