Hibernian FC – Alcohol Awareness

In 2016, the Hibernian Community Foundation was funded by the Scotch Whisky Action Fund to deliver a unique alcohol prevention project to Primary 5, Primary 6 and Primary 7 students. The project was delivered in 20 schools in Leith and North Edinburgh.

Alcohol Awareness for Primary School Pupils

The project introduces children to alcohol and its effects whilst promoting positive lifestyle messages of physical activity and health eating.

Alcohol Awareness’ sessions

The project is delivered across 8 weekly sessions by the Foundation coaches. Hibernian FC players and coaches also provide input, and act as positive role models. Each session lasts 90 minutes and consists of three components broken into 3 parts: first half, half-time and second half.

First half consists of a classroom session covering the topic of the week and includes issues, such as how much do they know about alcohol, units and guidelines, alcohol and its effects (physical and social), talking to their parents about alcohol and a celebration event and certificate presentation.

Half-time consists of a drink and a piece of fruit whilst the second half introduces a physical activity session which can include football, dance and tai chi.

All sessions are interactive, using games, discussion based work and learning resources developed specifically for the programme.

Results

During the project’s first phase, over 1,800 primary school pupils have taken part, showing a promising outcome.

The Alcohol Awareness project is expected to have a second delivery in 2018.
