World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2020
The 28th of April is the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the annual international campaign day to promote safe, healthy and decent work.
The World Day for Safety and Health at Work was established in 2003 by the International Labour Organization (ILO), with the goal to stimulate a national and international dialogue on safety and health at work.
As governments, employers, workers and whole societies are fighting COVID-19 , the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2020 will address the outbreak of infectious diseases at work, focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ILO is using this day to raise awareness of the adoption of safe practices in workplaces and the role that occupational safety and health (OSH) services play. ILO published a Report for World for Safety and Health at Work 2020 to highlight measures to prevent and control the risk of contagion, psychosocial risks, ergonomic and other work-related safety and health risks associated with the pandemic.
“We need special measures to protect the millions of health care workers and other workers who risk their own health for us every day.” said Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General. “Teleworking offers new opportunities for workers to keep working. However, workers must be able to negotiate these arrangements so that they retain balance with other responsibilities, such as caring for children, the sick or the elderly, and of course themselves.”
Here are some initiatives carried on by our member clubs during this uncertain time:
- Work safety for the medical staff – FC Shakhtar donated personal protection gear for medical staff; Benfica’s players donated 51 thousand masks, 540 thousand pairs of gloves, 750 special protective glasses, 750 thermal suits and 200 infrared thermometers,
- Online work etiquette – Sheffield United Community Foundation has shared a Google Meet etiquette guide for workers in order to make homeworking easier for those who are forced to stay at home.
- Support for workers’ mental health – Newcastle United Foundation launched a campaign in support of Freeman Hospital staff’s mental health.
- Hot meals for the health workers – Ferencvárosi Torna Club through the initiative “Cooking for the Heroes”, have delivered hot meals to the doctors and nurses of the Saint László Hospital.
- Free accommodation for NHS workers – Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovic and former Manchester United Neville and Giggs made their hotels available free of charge for NHS workers
