World Autism Awareness Day 2020

2 April 2020

World Autism Awareness Day 2020

Today, (Thursday 2nd April) is the thirteenth annual World Autism Awareness Day, whereby we all come together to recognise and celebrate the rights of people with Autism.

Hundreds of thousands of landmarks, buildings, homes and communities all around the world are coming together today, to Light It Up Blue in recognition of people with autism and those who love and support them. Autism-friendly events and educational activities will take place throughout April, aiming to increase the understanding and acceptance of people with autism as well as to foster worldwide support and inspire a kinder, more inclusive world.

The rights of persons with autism must be taken into account in the formulation of all responses to the COVID-19 virus. So, on this World Autism Awareness Day, let us all stand together, support each other and show our solidarity for people with autism. Find out more here.

See how our network have been showing their support below:

Fundación Getafe CF

#DiaMundialAutismo! Fundación Getafe CF wants everyone to join them in showing their support and solidarity to people with autism by lighting their balconies blue at 9:00 p.m tonight and by spreading awareness using #LIUB.

Everton

Tonight, Everton FC will be lighting up Goodison Park royal blue for two important reasons. The first reason is to honour the NHS workers as they tirelessly continue their efforts on the frontline of the battle against the coronavirus outbreak. And, the second reason is to shine a light on World Autism Awareness Day 2020, as part of a week-long plan of action from the National Autistic Society [NAS] to spread awareness and increase acceptance of autism. Everton in the Community has also shared a video of one of their female disability team participants, who shares an important message! #StaySafe (see below).

Rangers

Rangers have shown their support for all of the participants who regularly attend their Autism Friendly Football sessions!

UEFA Foundation For Children

Our partner, UEFA Foundation For Children followed up on a project they supported back in 2015 to improve communication for autistic children. On the video linked below, you can see how technology has helped to improve the children’s day-to-day lives.

Club Brugge

#WereldAutismeDag! Club Brugge Foundation are showing their support by celebrating its ‘Voetbalkraks’ team. The club’s Autism Football Team get the opportunity to play football at their favourite Club every week. The Foundation has said that the players cannot wait to get back to their sessions once football returns!

Here are some ways you can ‘Light It Up Blue’ and show your support this #WorldAutismAwarenessDay2020!
