Werder Bremen wins UEFA Grassroots Award

EFDN member Werder Bremen has been announced as the winner of the 2020 UEFA Grassroots Award for Best Professional Football Club. Shakhtar Social Foundation won the Silver medal.

“I would like to congratulate our member Werder Bremen on winning the 2020 UEFA Grassroots Award. Werder Bremen is a very active member of the network and a partner in our Pan-European programmes Community Champions League, Scoring for Health, Show Racism the Red Card Europe and Welcome through Football. The CSR-department has developed innovative social initiatives throughout the pandemic to help fans, especially children, stay active and healthy.

I would also like to congratulate Shakhtar Social Foundation on winning the Silver medal. We are proud that both clubs are part of our network and look forward to continuing exchanging knowledge and delivering community programmes together”, said Hubert Rovers, CEO EFDN Foundation.

Programme partners

Werder Bremen is a partner in the following EFDN programmes:

  • Community Champions League: The Community Champions League is a social street football competition organised locally in ten cities in eight European countries, where participating teams can earn more points through fair play, equitable support and volunteering in community activities than by winning their street football matches.
  • Scoring for Health: Scoring for Health encourages children from 7 to 14 years and their parents to adopt a healthy lifestyle and make them aware of healthy nutrition. This programme will be running for 3 years, where 3 periods of 20 weeks of various activities will be delivered by the participating football clubs and the Portuguese FA in cooperation with local schools and health organisations.
  • Show Racism the Red Card Europe: Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is a 24-month anti-racism and anti-discrimination programme. SRtRC utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society. The project aims to raise awareness of diversity, foster social cohesion, and reduce physical and verbal violence linked to racism.
  • Welcome through Football: The Welcome through Football methodology fosters the social inclusion and employability of young newly arrived immigrants and refugees. Therefore, our activities are promoting the quality of youth work, the intercultural dialogue and strengthen knowledge and acceptance of diversity in society.

Shakhtar Social is also a partner in the Scoring for Health and Welcome through Football programme. Both members have supported the 2020 #Morethanfootball Action Weeks.
