Werder Bremen organised its first Walking Football tournament
The”Old Steerns”, the walking football group of the SV Werder Bremen, organised their first Walking Football tournament at the stadium of the German club. Among the 20 participating teams were also selections from EFDN-members FC Schalke 04, Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg and Feyenoord Rotterdam.
The teams entered the stadium through the players’ tunnel before competing for the trophy. The two “Old Steerns” teams were led onto the field by Werder legends Willi Lemke, Jürgen L. Born and Mirko Votava. “It was great fun and I hope that this event will have an inspiring effect for all participants and that this sport can develop further,” said Werder icon Votava, who took part in walking football for the first time ever.
A chance for older people
Walking football, a special variant of football is a game where people are not allowed to run. “Many older people who used to play football also have the chance to continue this sport. You have to behave tactically differently and play technically differently,” explained Werder Bremen President Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, who took over the award ceremony with the overall winner from VfL Ummen.
While there are already hundreds of teams in England, the trend is gradually spreading to Germany. “This tournament is one of the big highlights. We are very proud to host it today. We noticed the trend, so we trained our employees and established training groups”, says Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald about the team, which was founded in 2016 and was one of the first in Germany.
