“Walking Football” for everybody – a training day with Werder Bremen

Monday afternoon in the gym: Football-players are warming up for training. Some of them have been practicing for months, others are complete newcomers. They all came to try one sport: Walking Football. In contrast to normal football, Walking Football does not allow any physical contact or running, so elderly people especially like it in order to stay active and healthy. However, it is definitely a sport for everybody.

I particularly like that you get to be part of one large community. For me, it is also important to get out of my house now and then, because always lying on the couch isn’t for me”, describes 61 year-old Gerd Schomaker, participant of the “Walking Football” program.

He apparently is not the only one who shares this opinion. Thirty football-players, most of them between sixty and seventy-eight years old, have decided to try the sport offered by SV Werder Bremen om Monday. Two of them: president and secretary of the club Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald and WERDER-BEWEGT-ambassador Willi Lemke, who both decided to actively support the training day in the gym.

“Being able to offer such a great sport is something special for our club

After an extensive warm-up, the athletes got the chance to demonstrate their sporting abilities: Three different drills helped getting a first impression of the sport and improving the beginners’ feeling for handling a football. By participating in a match at the end of the lesson, everyone had the opportunity to establish the newly learned skills while additionally having a lot of fun together.

At the end of the day, Walking Football had convinced the attendant crowd.
The project shows how innovative we at SV Werder Bremen can actually be, due to the fact that “Walking Football” has just recently been included in our program. Being able to offer such a great sport is something special for our club” said Hess-Grunewald, confirming the general opinion.
