Svensk Elitfotboll meets with the Government on the security situation
On Friday, Football, the Swedish Sports Confederation and the police were called to the Government for a meeting regarding the current public debate on violence in football stadiums.
“It’s good that politicians are getting involved. All parties must actively work together on these issues,”
Simon Åström, Chairman of the Swedish Elite Football Association
The meeting was attended by Minister for Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) and Minister for Sport Jakob Forssmed (Kd) along with representatives from the Swedish Football Association, Swedish Elite Football, the Swedish Sports Confederation and the police. All parties presented their views on the incident and the current security situation for elite football in Sweden.
“The main reason we are sitting here today is because of the individuals who commit serious disturbances and offences in our stadiums. It is these individuals and their actions that we should focus on. Having said that, it was a good first meeting in this constellation that I see as a starting point for a more detailed and further dialogue with the politicians,”
Simon Åström, Chairman of the Swedish Elite Football Association
Svensk Elitfotboll’s representatives highlighted the challenges of current legislation, including camera surveillance and the difficulty of identifying those who commit disorderly behaviour due to masking.
