Supporting the Homeless World Cup
The Foundation is delighted to be supporting this year’s Homeless World Cup which is being held in Glasgow from Sunday 10 July – Saturday 16 July.
The 7 day event sees 64 teams, representing 52 countries, come together to celebrate and highlight the year round life changing work of the Homeless World Cup National Partner network.
The Foundation has donated £3,000 towards the costs of refereeing the matches and has offered to arrange tours of Ibrox Stadium for members of the national teams and items for goodie bags for everyone who takes part, as well as offering attendance at the event by members of the first team squad.
In total, 512 players will arrive in Glasgow each with their own story to tell about how football has helped them change their lives. The tournament will take place in the heart of Glasgow, on George Square, which will be converted into an outdoor street football venue.
Foundation Director Connal Cochrane commented, “Rangers has a long association with the Homeless World Cup and as our fans know, the Foundation has supported several homeless initiatives over the years, most recently donating £70,000 to Glasgow City Mission’s Winter Night Shelter.
“The work the Homeless World Cup National Partner Network does in each of the countries involved is incredible and gives homeless people an opportunity to take part in transformative programmes which can help them build a brighter life.
“It’s fantastic that Glasgow is playing host to this year’s event and we’d like to wish all the participants good luck and hope they have a fantastic tournament.”
Mel Young, co-founder and president of the Homeless World Cup said, “We’re grateful to the Rangers Charity Foundation for this generous donation to the Homeless World Cup Foundation ahead of Glasgow 2016. George Square will be an inspiring place during July, and we look forward to welcoming thousands of supporters to what will be a very special celebration”.
The Homeless World Cup takes place from 10-16 July, every day in George Square. Entry is free and no tickets are required.
