Summer at Big Hearts: Action-Packed Months Ahead
The summer has arrived, and Big Hearts are looking forward to an action-packed couple of months! Throughout the school holidays the Charity will continue to engage with participants across all programmes.
The holiday initiative School’s Out! is back and will welcome up to 25 children referred by local schools to Big Hearts. Every weekday afternoon between 4th and 29th July, the group will enjoy a range of exciting activities from outdoor games, including Big Hearts Sports Day to music workshops and arts and crafts!
The Big Hearts charity is thrilled to have been awarded a 5-figure grant for School’s Out! from the Scottish Government via Edinburgh City Council’s Summer Holiday Food and Childcare Programme 2022 and funding from longtime partner Radio Forth Cash for Kids. This allows us to continue to make a positive difference in South West Edinburgh, by helping isolated young people thrive outside the school term.
This year, participants from Big Hearts’ Off the Bench project have chosen to spend an afternoon volunteering at School’s Out!. As part of the SPFL Trust course, they are required to host a special citizenship day for young adults. This involves each young person volunteering for a good cause within the local community.
In August, they celebrate one year of our That’s Me project. To mark the occasion, the young people will go out together for a fun afternoon at Camera Obscura. They will also enjoy a trip to the Edinburgh Festival, to see a show of their choice. The group will continue to meet as normal throughout the holidays, with these additional activities aiming to help make new memories and create social connections.
Big Hearts Football and Edinburgh Memories will continue to meet weekly. Participants will enjoy an afternoon playing bowls on the nearby green of the North British Distillery.
