Research proves positive effects of NAC Breda “Playing for Success” programme
Teamplay@NAC, the community foundation of NAC Breda cooperated with the research agency Sport2B to investigate the impact of their “Playing for Success” programme and the outcomes are very positive.
Playing for Success is a community programme developed for young students who have low self-confidence and self-esteem and because of this are not reaching up to their full potential. Every week, around 150 pupils from primary, secondary and vocational education come to the learning zone of NAC Breda, the NACademy. In the Rat Verlegh Stadium, they follow a programme adjusted to their needs, which enables them to return to their own school with more motivation and with more confidence. Sport2B conducted research on the effects of Playing for Success.
Attendees are more confident
The special environment of the stadium and the personal attention for the participants, as well as the involvement of players and technical staff, ensure that learning is fun again. The programme has had a lot of impact on participants since its inception in 2011 and this is recently confirmed again with the outcomes from Sport2B’s research report. Former participants are (very) positive about the effects of the programme. In the research, four characteristics were observed: self-confidence, motivation, independent learning, and collaboration. 40-70 percent of the participants indicate that they can collaborate better at school and have more confidence in their options after completing the programme.
Parents see positive changes
The parents of former participants of Playing for Success also have a positive opinion about the participation of their child in the project. Between 60 and 95 percent rate the positive socio-emotional changes that Playing for Success has brought to their child. Above all, they see that their child feels better about themselves, have more fun in school and gets along with the other pupils’ more easily than before.
Teachers refer to the exclusive learning environment
According to the teachers of schools, the project is so successful because the selected ‘underperformers’ have the privilege to gain experience in an exclusive and popular environment. They return to the classroom with appealing stories. Through the programme, participants become more convinced that their opinion matters and they regain the courage to express themselves. An important point is that the effects are often structural and therefore of great benefit to the pupils in the long term.
Full report available on the online learning platform
To continue with the successful work, the preparations for the next school year are already in full swing. In the 2018/2019 season, many pupils can again learn with great pleasure in the environment of the Rat Verlegh Stadium. The complete report is available in Dutch on our online learning platform.
