SPFL Trust to launch new employability initiative for young people

In Spring 2022, SPFL Trust will launch a new employability programme – Kick Off Your Career. The new initiative will be delivered in partnership with Jobcentre Plus and four SPFL club associated community trusts. Participants (aged 18-24) will have the opportunity to receive a number of qualifications, including the SQA Level 4 Employability Award, first aid training and customer service skills. Additionally they will receive bespoke 1:1 career support with mock interviews and a chance to develop their CV.

Over the course of two cohorts, the project will reach almost 100 young people who are currently unemployed – this comes after a particularly challenging period due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The initial pilot phase will take place in Jobcentre Plus North East of Scotland District, where there are currently high levels of unemployment. Four community trusts in the district, three of which are also EFDN members, are taking part including: Aberdeen FC Community TrustDundee FC Community TrustMontrose Community Trust and Raith Rovers Community Foundation.

“The launch of Kick Off Your Career marks an exciting point in our strategy, where employability becomes an area of specific focus. We are delighted to be working in partnership with both Jobcentre Plus and the participating community trusts to deliver this important initiative. […] Clubs are at the heart of their communities, and for many young people a place they feel very much connected to. Not only will young people gain qualifications, this innovative programme will help young people to become more confident, with a focus on both their mental and physical wellbeing. […] We are looking forward to supporting participants to take their next step forward in their career or education – it is a privilege to be a part of their journey.”

Nicky Reid, CEO SPFL Trust

“I am delighted with the partnership we have built with the SPFL community trusts and what it will allow us to achieve for the young people of North East Scotland. Kick Off Your Career will provide such important support, to help move these young people to a positive destination.”

Alison Findlater, DWP Group Director for East and North Scotland

“My team are delighted to be working in partnership with the SPFL Trust to give young people in North East Scotland access to quality training via their local football clubs, which I’m sure will give them the skills needed to improve their prospects of securing employment opportunities. […] My ambition is to build on this relationship and offer the same opportunity to all unemployed people within the remit of DWP.”
