SMF Works – Liverpool FC Foundation Are Recruiting For Their Work Experience Programme
LFC Foundation‘s Work Experience programme is part of the SMF Works initiative which is funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation. SMF Works is a multi-faceted employability programme which encompasses school early intervention, work experience for school leavers and open access delivery for 16 – 25 year-olds furthest away from the job market.
SMF Works is broken down into 4 key delivery areas:
Work Experience
The LFC Foundation & LFC have joined forces to provide a work experience programme aimed towards year 12 students.
This programme has been created due to a high number of requests that the club receive and the dramatic decrease in workplace opportunities for young people during CV-19.
The week consists of 3 days of skill development delivered by the LFC Employability team, focusing on workplace behaviours, important soft skills and the LFC Club Values. During the other two days participants can experience a range of departments across the LFC Foundation and LFC.
Departments that have provided support for work experience so far include:
- International Soccer Schools
- Partnerships
- Internal communications
- Hospitality Sales
- Hospitality
- Grounds maintenance
- Staffing
- Marketing
- Crime prevention
- Disability & Inclusion
- GO PLAY!
School Pathways
This strand of the SMF Works programme involves delivery in schools & colleges across LCR. Created in line with the Gatsby benchmarks, the pathway programme is separated into 5 strands which relate to specific departments at LFC. A series of seven 1 hour sessions focusing on workplace behaviours, key employability skills and exploring the LFC Core values will be followed by an invite to Anfield for a tour and final workshop.
Pathway strands:
- Sport & Community
- Technology & Digital
- Business & Operations
- Hospitality & Commercial
- Life skills & Enterprise
Considering one of the Gatsby Benchmarks “Addressing the needs of each pupil” it allows us to be specific and targeted in our approach. It also allows us to utilize the specific departments in LFC and the LFC Foundation for opportunities such as guest speakers and tours.
Open Access
SMF Works open access programmes are available to individuals between the ages of 16-25, who are not in education, employment or training. All participants that complete an open access programme will receive a Sport Leaders’ level 2 qualification.
Their most recent programme was delivered in partnership with LSTB, who are a social mobility charity that supports bright young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into meaningful job roles. Additionally, they were also partnered with BDO who are a UK-based accountancy and finance firm.
7 young people engaged with the programme and developed confidence, motivation and understanding of workplace behaviours.
All of these young people were successful with interviews and secured employment with the BDO post programme.

Careers Uncovered
The focus of these events are on the careers and pathways of each guest speaker, leading to the current role that they are in.
The idea is to inform and inspire participants who access these calls, highlighting that there are several ways into employment.
LFC Club explores values of Commitment, Unity, Dignity & Ambition and how these values are important on the route to a career.
