Schalke hilft project: Children build bird houses

This week, a number of children and young people visited the football field project by Schalke hilft!, which is offered to different age groups during the autumn holidays. The project offers the possibility of training sessions under the guidance of certified trainers on Schalke’s football pitches. – funded by the RAG Foundation. In addition, the program is regularly supplemented by cultural offerings.

This time, the children and young people were not only active in sports, but also in handicrafts: After their training session, they built small birdhouses together on the Hugo soccer field at the Rungenberghalde. In cooperation with the Natur- und Vogelschutzverein Borken eV, the young craftsmen assembled the birdhouses themselves from individual components and attached them to suitable trees in the immediate vicinity of the football field – with the friendly support of the Emscher Genossenschaft.

Jochen Teroerde, chairman of the nature and bird protection association Borken eV, personally accompanied the construction of the houses. He also talked to the children about the diverse world of birds and explained the purpose of the self-built shelters. A group of works from the association has been offering the construction of birdhouses regularly at schools or in companies for some time. The participants in the soccer field project learned how they can make a small contribution to supporting nature and bird protection with their own hands.

Combine environmental protection and sport

With its newly founded sustainability department, FC Schalke 04 expanded its efforts to protect nature and the environment some time ago. The aim is to use various offers to promote sensitivity to the topic in connection with sporting activities at a young age. The children and young people were enthusiastic about the opportunity to grab a hammer and nail themselves and, in keeping with the motto of the day, they tuned in to the song “Wer kreist wie ein Falke? FC Schalke, FC Schalke!”.
