San Mamés lights up for World Cystic Fibrosis Day
Athletic Club took part in the commemoration of World Cystic Fibrosis Day with the lighting of their stadium San Mamés in recognition of all those affected by the condition. For 7 years, the International Cystic Fibrosis Association has observed September 8 as a day of awareness for this chronic and hereditary ailment, and the Rojiblanco club has joined the cause.
This degenerative disease affects the respiratory and digestive systems by causing infections mainly in the lungs, liver or pancreas. Despite the remarkable medical advances that researchers have made in recent years in its treatment, there still exists no cure for the condition that affects the health of patients and limits their life expectancy.
The gesture to light up the stadium is yet another reminder of the many ways clubs use the power of football to highlight and raise awareness about issues beyond the pitch. While football is what drives activities within Athletic Bilbao, there exists on the periphery numerous initiatives that the club and its foundation tackle. These range from issues that affect their fans, players, staff and the surrounding community. Indeed, Athletic Club are #Morethanfootball.
