Samen RKC and the Central Brabant Library’s Reading Project ‘Score a Book!’

1 in 10 children in the Netherlands has a reading delay. Together RKC decides to tackle this problem together with De Bibliotheek Midden-Brabant. With the project Score a Book! Group 5 children from the municipalities of Waalwijk, Heusden and Loon op Zand will ‘score’ as many books as possible in 9 weeks. Various football players from RKC Waalwijk encourage the children to read as much as possible during this period. On February 1, the time had come: the kick-off of this special reading project.

The children of group 5 of primary school Teresia in Waalwijk watch RKC mascot RiCKy enter the classroom with amazement. “What do you think we’re going to do?” asks reading and media consultant Lieke from the Central Brabant Library. Fingers shoot into the air. “Are we going to the RKC stadium?” and “Are we going to play a game of soccer outside?”. Lieke laughs and says: “It has something to do with football… You are participating in the reading project Score a Book!”

For nine weeks, group 5 children from the Waalwijk, Heusden, and Loon op Zand regions will read the best books. For each book, they can put a sticker on the special score poster. In between, a player visits the class to see how things are going and the project ends with a sporty conclusion at the football club WSC. Then we also hear how many books the children have read together.

Teacher Nick van den Meijdenberg of primary school Teresia is already enthusiastic about the project.

“Reading promotion is an important topic here at school and we are always looking for new ways to get children excited about reading. Score a Book! is therefore the perfect opportunity to engage in reading in a playful way. Also very nice to see the connection between the school, the library and RKC Waalwijk. When the children heard that we were going to do a project with RKC Waalwijk, they immediately jumped up. I’m curious to see what the coming weeks will bring.”

About Score a Book!
Score a Book! started a few years ago in Groningen and is now being rolled out across the country. In the regions of Waalwijk, Heusden, and Loon op Zand, Samen RKC, and the Midden-Brabant Library have joined forces to promote Scoor a Book! to make a success. The project is made possible by a financial contribution from Q-Promotions. “I saw we all got new books, so I’m excited to start reading!”
