Refugee group visits Northampton’s stadium for workshops

Last week the Northampton Town FC Community Trust welcomed the Learn2Live group to the Sixfields Stadium for Mental Health and Employability workshops with partners Northamptonshire Sport & Northamptonshire Police.

The Learn2Live group is a sanctuary for people seeking asylum or people who are refugees, aiming to collaborate with all local groups and organisations in Northampton. They are hoping to engage local schools, faith groups, voluntary organisations and others interested in supporting their cause.

The group took part in a Mental Health workshop led by Inclusion Officer Anna Letts where they recognised their own emotions from various experiences and learnt how to deal with them in the future to help resolve potential personal issues. In the next workshop, they took part in identifying what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle delivered by Health & Wellbeing Officer Akshay Mistry. The group had to recognise the ‘eatwell plate’ and understand the impact of good and poor nutrition.

Employability Officer Ian Crow then delivered a stadium tour, quizzing the group what employees would be working on a match day, the group recognised 33 types of work on a Northampton Town home matchday! The Northampton Town Community Trust’s partnered project of ‘Pathways4Recovery’ was shared with participants letting them know how they can be supported into employment and what match day working opportunities are available. In addition, Alex Mitchell from Northamptonshire Sport was there to discuss Sport volunteering options with the ‘Volunteer Coaching Academy’.

“The Learn2Live group is a great concept of people of different backgrounds coming together in the community, and even better the Northampton Town Community Trust have given support to the group to enhance life opportunities through seeking employment and the tools to deal with mental health.”

Ian Crow, Employability Officer at the Northampton Town Community Trust
