Real Betis Balompié rescues Galician fishing nets to turn them into goalposts
The goalposts at the Benito Villamarín will be dressed in sustainable nets, handcrafted by Galician fishing nets over the next year in collaboration with Finetwork and Real Betis Balompié.
Finetwork, a Spanish fibre and mobile company, has collaborated with Real Betis and its Forever Green platform, with the aim of rescuing fishing nets from the ocean and transforming them into the new nets for the goals of the Betis stadium. These nets, which will receive the applause, chants and ovations of more than 50,000 people, match after match, have turned the Benito Villamarín into an icon of sporting sustainability, also contributing to the elimination of this type of pollution, which is a great threat to marine species.
Likewise, Finetwork, in collaboration with Real Betis and Forever Green, have managed to give a second life to 100 kilos of netting from marine waste, which means not emitting 166.37 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere. To make this possible, they had the cooperation of a group of nets from different fishing villages in Galicia, who carried out the artisanal transformation of the nets, which are already installed in the men’s and women’s stadiums.
Sport and sustainability, a common goal
The fibre and mobile operator has a strong involvement in the world of sport, an area with which it shares values such as responsibility and self-improvement and therefore it’s one of the main sponsors of numerous teams and competitions, including Real Betis, which it has been supporting since 2021. United by their commitment to the environment and people, the operator and the club seek to contribute to the fight for environmental protection in a pioneering way in the field of sport.
“For us, carrying out this action, together with our sponsor, Real Betis, and its Forever Green platform, was something we had been thinking about for some time, as we share our commitment to sustainability and our interest in increasing the positive impact we have on the environment. At Finetwork we firmly believe in our motto: “Better is possible”, and with this initiative, we contribute in a positive way to the materialisation of this”.
Alejandro Delgado, head of communications, media and CSR at Finetwork
“This project is fully aligned with the values of Forever Green and Real Betis. With this action we are extending our reach by carrying out actions that also care for our seas. It is very important to join initiatives like these that work to reduce the impact of waste in the sea and to make our fans aware of the importance of also taking care of our oceans. In addition, doing this hand in hand with our sponsors once again reaffirms Forever Green’s goal of harnessing the power of football and the companies that are part of it to save our planet from the effects of climate change. We are very proud that our main sponsor Finetwork is characterised by this social commitment”.
