PSV’s Joëlle Smits is Spieren voor Spieren Ambassador

Striker Joëlle Smits is the new Spieren voor Spieren ambassador. The 20-year-old PSV and Netherlands national team striker is joining forces with the organisation that caters to more than 20,000 children with muscle disease in the Netherlands. “For children with a muscle disease, it is not self-evident that they can play football or run. That’s why I like to use my healthy muscles for children with sick muscles,” she says.

In her role as ambassador, Smits will work at several sporting events organised by Spieren voor Spieren. She will meet children from all walks of life across the Netherlands and offer extra support and inspiration alongside football activities. She is also coming on board to further increase the brand awareness of Spieren voor Spieren and as an ambassador, Smits will be visible in the promotion and communication of the PSV Foundation.

Smits is joining a solid team of prominent figures from the sports world who are selflessly committed to the foundation. Among them are chief ambassador Sven Kramer, patrons Frank and Ronald de Boer, but also honorary ambassadors Truus and Louis van Gaal. Spieren voor Spieren aims to help children beat and learn to live with muscle diseases. “Football is my life. I am very happy that I can do that every day. And I am also very grateful that I have healthy muscles to be able to do that. Recently I met child ambassador Amy from Spieren voor Spieren and saw up close the impact muscle disease has on children.”

“I broke my fibula a few years ago. That was very disappointing, but I knew: this will be all right. My bone heals by itself, and I also have to work hard at the physiotherapist. But then I can do what I love most: play football. Fortunately, there was a solution for my injury. This solution is not yet available for many children with a muscle disease. Spieren voor Spieren is committed to helping these children. I would like to contribute to that. As a top sports ambassador I want to show that there is more to life than football. Important things, such as the fight against muscle diseases. I hope that, as a top, young athlete, I can get more people my own age to think about it. I enjoy helping and inspiring. I am very proud that I am a top sport ambassador of Spieren voor Spieren,” she concludes.

About Spieren voor Spieren
Spieren voor Spieren was founded on January 28, 1998 by former football coach Jan Reker. He received direct support from the Dutch national team. Under the motto healthy muscles for sick muscles, people spread all over the Netherlands, often help by means of a (sports) action, for children with a muscle disease.
