Palestinian Women’s Football Team Visit Everton

Everton in the Community welcomed Diyar Women’s Football Club to the home of the Blues as part of a tour of Merseyside.

The Palestinian team, which was founded by players at Bethlehem University in 2008 and boasts many players from the Palestine national team, also met the city’s Lord Mayor before travelling to Goodison Park.

EitC, Everton’s official charity, took the group on a tour of the Club’s stadium before arranging a fixture at its new Cruyff Court, located at The People’s Hub on Spellow Lane.

After a thrilling 60 minutes, Diyar Women’s team ended the game with a 36-17 victory.

Sarah Atherton, EitC Neighbourhood Manager, helped to facilitate the visit. She said: “We always wanted The People’s Hub to become a safe place for people from all walks of life, so it’s amazing to see football fanatics from thousands of miles away take to the pitch. Football is about social inclusion and can bring people together, who might never otherwise meet and it’s been incredible to see the two sides come together today. We hope that the Diyar Ladies team will always remember their visit to Everton and enjoy the rest of their trip.

The trip is being supported by fund-raising initiatives and local host families will be providing free accommodation.
