NEC supports opening School garden Haterts Hofje

In collaboration with Helicon Nijmegen VMBO and De Goffert Hospitality & Events  the start of the project ‘Het Haterts Hofje’  took place in the Goffert Stadium. Top chef Jonathan Karpathios left the 75 children of primary schools Hidaya, Small World and Jenaplanschool St. Nicholas acquainted with the preparation of a healthy meal. N.E.C.’s Jeffrey Leiwakabessy came to talk about the importance of vegetables for health and how the diet of an athlete looks.

The school garden ‘Haterts Hofje’

Haterts Hofje is a school garden in the grounds of secondary school Helicon VMBO Nijmegen, located near the Goffert Stadium, where the primary school pupils garden in the growing season. In this garden, the children get lessons from garden master Luc van Es and maintain their own garden. The harvest is partly taken home and partly used to prepare meals together at a later stage. The goal is to teach children where vegetables come from and thus also to increase their involvement with healthy food.

Inspirational

The morning was opened by Jeffrey Leiwakabessy, who is now already working on his eleventh season with the Nijmegen club, so he is very well known on how a healthy diet is. The very young, but attentive audience for the 35-year-old left back of N.E.C., brought  lunchboxes including containing products marked by them as “healthy” are exposed to Leiwakabessy. He thereby indicated what he as a professional football player can and can not eat.

For the second part of the morning chef Karpathios opened a salad bar, in which the children (in some cases for the first time) came into contact with. Different colors from carrots, radish and vegetable chips were shown. Two children who had compiled the best salad by the top chef, were eventually awarded a version of his book. All children then ate their salad. Tasty! In addition, each child at the end of the successful event received a ticket for the clash N.E.C. – SC Cambuur.
