N.E.C. launched a reading promotion project “Score a Book!”
Primary school pupils celebrated the festive conclusion of the reading promotion project “Score a Book!”, a collaboration between N.E.C., Library Gelderland Zuid and ROC Nijmegen.
On Wednesday 5 April, over 750 primary school pupils from fifteen schools gathered at sports club Quick 1888 in Nijmegen. During the ‘whistle’, N.E.C. mascot Bikkel and four pupils revealed the results: in total, the pupils read 4,216 books and spent around 9,893 reading hours. This amounts to an average of 5.5 books and almost thirteen reading hours per pupil.
“Enjoying reading as much as possible” – that is the aim of the ‘Score a Book!’ reading promotion project. Fifteen schools from Nijmegen and surroundings joined the project this year. The kick-off took place on 31st of January at primary school Het Kleurrijk in Nijmegen, where N.E.C. footballer and former pupil Ibrahim Cissoko read aloud. At the 14 other participating schools, N.E.C. players also read aloud that day.
Whistle Signal
Over the past nine weeks, 763 pupils put stickers (‘goals’) on a poster for each book read, both at school and at home. They also kept track of the number of reading hours. The total number was revealed on 5th of April during the ‘whistle signal’: the sporting conclusion at sports club Quick 1888 with games course for the pupils. Students Sport and Exercise from ROC Nijmegen organised the sports day.
Enthusiastic pupils and teachers
By adding a sports element, both the schools and the library hope to kindle the reading fire among pupils. Pupils could get a lot of reading mileage during the project period, giving them a better idea of which books they like and which they don’t. The teacher can then build on this.
“The pupils of group 5-6 are extremely enthusiastic about this project. We have read a lot of books!”
