MORE THAN FOOTBALL AWARD NOMINEE – SHEFFIELD UNITED COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
EFDN is presenting the candidates for the More than Football Award. From an array of high-quality submissions for the award, SUFC’s ‘Fans Fighting Cancer’ (Fans FC) project has been selected for the initial 10 projects longlist.
The goal of the More than Football Award is to honour the best social initiatives in Europe delivered by a European club, league or FA by celebrating the work they do on and off-pitch on local, national and international levels. The winner receives not only recognition for having implemented the most innovative and impactful Community and Social Responsibility programme in European football, but also wins a complete branded Mini-Pitch System modular sports solution which will be developed in partnership between the winning organisation, EFDN and sponsor Musco Lighting.
The shortlist will be announced on the 5th of October. Shortlisted organisations will be invited to present at the 16th EFDN Conference in Breda, The Netherlands (9-10 November). EFDN members will decide on the winner by voting.
FANS FC
Sheffield United’s one-of-a-kind ‘Fans Fighting Cancer’ project helps people tackle cancer and reduce the dreaded disease’s effects in and around the city of Sheffield. It caters to people aged 16+ diagnosed with any form of cancer, those affected by it in some way or people simply looking to improve their health to prevent cancer. The project also caters to those with underlying health issues which increase the likelihood of a cancer diagnosis in the future, including but not limited to diabetes, obesity and sedentary lifestyles. People of all abilities are encouraged to participate, highlighting the need and benefits of being both mentally and physically
The project is funded by the Premier League and Weston Park Cancer Charity and involves free mental health care and physical activity support for 190+ participants. It has proved to be priceless during the pandemic as lockdowns and closures have inadvertently affected the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
SUFC’s initiative aims to encourage physical activity and highlight (mental) health benefits, at the same time increasing one’s quality of life by the reduction of stress and anxiety.
