More than Football Award Nominee – Montrose FC

This year will see the first More than Football Award ceremony at the 13th EFDN Conference, hosted at Camp Nou, Barcelona on the 19th and 20th of November 2019. From an array of high-quality submissions for the award, Montrose FC’s “Tackling Education” is one of 10 projects that have been selected for the initial long list.

The project “Tackling Education” is a 9-month initiative that reaches over 1,000 children from the age of 5 to 11 each year, using football as the context to successfully improve upon school attendance, educational achievement and attainment. The programmes focus on some key UN Sustainable Development Goals, such as no poverty, good health & wellbeing, quality education, reduced inequalities, and partnerships for the goals to name just a few. These programmes have been identified as being extremely successful in raising attainment and achievement in the areas of health, numeracy, literacy, carbon literacy and science, by using the fun and inspiring context of football in all activities, but also the stadium (including the pitch, boot room, club shop and press room, to name just a few areas utilised) as an alternative and appealing classroom.

The club is aware of its responsibility for locals

Montrose Football Club, founded in 1879, is a small club with a big heart. The club, aware of its responsibilities towards the lives and in particular the wellbeing of those in its locality. The charity arm, Links Park Community Trust, work with a range of partners in the identification of local need, such as health inequalities, and develop and deliver programmes that are designed to address such, with examples being our ‘Football Memories’ reminiscence project for those living with dementia, our ‘Walk & Talk’ initiative for socially isolated older adults and our ‘Walking Football’ programme for those with mental health disorders.
