More Than Football Award 2024 Longlist: SV Werder Bremen – Female Empowerment

The European Football for Development Network (EFDN) is proud to present the SV Werder Bremen – Female Empowerment project, which has been selected for the longlist of the More Than Football Award 2024.

In Germany girls are significantly more inactive than boys and the gap widens the older they get. One main reason for it is the underrepresentation of girls in sport.

Within the “Spielraum” concept Werder Bremen try to set a focus on reducing gender inequalities. Starting several sports programs in different challenging neighbourhoods especially for girls and young females. The female coaches of these offers are supported by four professional players of Werder Bremen’s women’s Bundesliga team.

In addition, they fundraised money in 2023 to implement the first full time employee in German Football focusing on female empowerment in deprived neighbourhoods with the beginning of the 2024/2025 season.

SV Werder Bremen additionally published its goal on World Womens Day March 8th 2024 to reach gender equity in all its bodies until 2026 with a minimum mandatory goal of 25% females in all bodies.
