More Than Football Award 2024 Longlist: FC Groningen in de Maatschappij – Sociale Activering

The European Football for Development Network (EFDN) is proud to present the FC Groningen in de Maatschappij – Sociale Activering project, which has been selected for the longlist of the More Than Football Award 2024.

The Social Activation program by FC Groningen in Society is a pioneering initiative aimed at connecting communities and fostering social integration through sport. At its core, the program is based on the idea that football is not just a game on the field but also a powerful tool for bringing about positive change in people’s lives.

The Social Activation program provides young adults who, for various reasons, are distanced from the labor market or society, the opportunity to diminish this gap. This is achieved through coaching and physical activity. Over a period of six months, the social trainers from FC Groningen conduct twice a week football and movement sessions for this target group. Additionally various workshops and meetings are organized aiming to establish more control and routine in participants’ lives.

Main project objectives

  • Participation in society
  • (paid) employment
  • Education
  • Active engagement in sports and movement
