Glasgow Rangers Manager visits Glasgow City Mission

Mark Warburton, Rangers Manager, visited Glasgow City Mission

Rangers Manager Mark Warburton last night visited the Foundation’s Community Partner, Glasgow City Mission, to see first-hand the work of the charity and help out at the Evening Drop-In Service which provides hot food for homeless and vulnerable people in our city.

The Manager helped volunteers serve soup, sandwiches and drinks and took time to chat to those who had come to the Mission that evening looking for a meal, shelter and companionship.

The Foundation is supporting Glasgow City Mission this season as one of two community partners focusing on the issue of homelessness in Glasgow.  Fans took part in our Big Ibrox Sleep Out events at the Stadium in November 2016 and raised an incredible £52,000 which was split between Glasgow City Mission, The Simon Community and the Foundation. The money donated to Glasgow City Mission was enough to pay for 17,000 hot meals, which cost as little at £1 each.  The Evening Drop-in Service helps on average 130 homeless and vulnerable people every evening, operating from Monday to Friday throughout the year.

The staff and volunteers also connect people to their skills workshops and other services to improve their situations.  One of the most important aspects of the Evening Drop-in Service is the chance to show kindness to those who often have no self-esteem and low expectations from life.  As relationships develop and trust grows, people open up about their circumstances to staff and volunteers and there is an opportunity to help people move forwards in their live.

The Foundation also supported Glasgow City Mission’s Winter Night Shelter last season, donating £70,000 to the Winter Night Shelter which provides emergency accommodation during the cold winter months for those who have no alternative but to sleep on the streets.
