Levante UD All Out #AgainstCancer
On Monday the 16th of October, the players of Levante UD carried out a unique and unprecedented action in Spanish football. They stepped onto the field at the Ciutat de València stadium wearing jerseys featuring a representation of a mastectomy on the chest, with a drawing of a breast on one side and a scar on the other.
In this clear and courageous manner, Levante UD visually joined the support for women who suffer from breast cancer, emphasizing that research is the only way to overcome this disease. According to the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), 35,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in Spain every year.
Levante UD gained the full support of the coaching staff and the players themselves, who proudly displayed their personal support for oncology patients in this match. The main sponsor, Marcos Automoción, readily offered the space on the jerseys for this action.
AN UNPRECEDENTED ACTION
Thanks to the Match Worn Shirt web platform, signed jerseys worn by the players during the match will be auctioned. Additionally, Levante UD will sell online all jerseys required by La Liga regulations for each match. The proceeds from their sale will be entirely donated to the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Valencia.
SPECIAL INVITATIONS
Levante UD invited representatives from some of the most prominent oncological, social, and medical organizations in the Valencian Community to the VIP Box at L’Alquería, as well as Sol Zander, a psychologist from the Spanish Association Against Cancer, and Lucia De Santos, a 38-year-old oncology patient. Both have shared their experiences in a video to raise awareness about the disease.
THE DISEASE IN NUMBERS
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in Spain in 2023 and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both women and men in the country. To this day, 6,528 women in Spain still lose their lives to breast cancer annually, and according to SEOM statistics, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives.
