Legia is #ReadyToHelp refugees from Ukraine
Legia Warsaw and Legia Warszawa Foundation are starting a new phase of the “#GotowiDoPomocy (Ready to Help) refugees from Ukraine” campaign. In cooperation with the European Football for Development Network which consists of the members: more than 130 clubs and Shakhtar Donetsk, European teams, FA’s and leagues. They will be sending the first needed articles via the Legia Foundation to Arena Lviv.
The Legia Warszawa Stadium will become a key point of structured assistance from European clubs for the residents of Ukraine struggling with the war there. EFDN, together with teams and member organizations, started collecting the most needed articles to be sent to the distribution center established at the stadium at ul. Łazienkowska. From Warsaw, the Legia Foundation will organize transports to Arena Lviv, where Shakhtar Donetsk creates a place of refuge for about 10,000 people who, as a result of hostilities, had to leave their homes and were left without a livelihood. You mainly need mattresses, camp beds, blankets, pillows and sheets.
It is estimated that over 2.5 million Ukrainians have had to leave their homes because of the war in their country. The sight of mothers with children fleeing the devastated cities where normal life was going on three weeks ago touches our hearts and consciences, but above all motivates us to action even more. Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Legia Foundation has been running a collection point for food and other basic necessities, which we donate to municipal points supplying refugees or directly to refugees reporting to our point. We also used the spaces on the Legia courts to provide accommodation for a team of young Ukrainian rowers. Legia Soccer Schools conducts free training for Ukrainian children, and the Legia Academy has also accepted several players. The range of our aid will now be even greater thanks to the joint action with EFDN and Shakhtar Donetsk, in which dozens of European clubs have been involved. As part of this action, with our help, we will directly reach the most needy who will find shelter in Lviv. This is the time when we can show the world that soccer embodies human values and is more than just a sport.
Anna Mioduska, President of the Legia Foundation
