International Day of Disabled People 2024

The International Day of Disabled People (IDDP) is celebrated on December 3rd each year. It focuses on increasing awareness of the importance of inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities. It’s a day to celebrate the contributions of individuals with disabilities and to encourage efforts for a more inclusive society.

At EFDN, we value the importance of creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. This day is an opportunity to highlight our efforts in breaking down barriers for people with disabilities, ensuring they can participate fully in society.

We are deeply committed to promoting inclusion and accessibility. We believe in the power of sport to transform and create a ‘fairer’ world for all people. Our dedication to this cause is reflected in the projects we undertake and the partnerships we build to support individuals with disabilities.

EFDN’s Commitment to Disability Inclusion

1. Special Champions League

The Special Champions League is one of our flagship initiatives, designed to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities with the chance to experience the thrill and prestige of a football competition inspired by the UEFA Champions League. This project offers teams the opportunity to compete, showcase their skills, have fun and be celebrated, fostering a sense of achievement and inclusion for all participants.

Since its launch, the Special Champions League has grown into a celebrated initiative, with four successful editions to date. The latest edition, hosted by Special Olympics Belgium in Ghent, welcomed 22 teams from across Europe. This vibrant event not only highlighted the remarkable talents of the athletes but also demonstrated the unifying power of football in breaking barriers and promoting inclusivity.

2. Voy! League

The Voy! League is a pioneering project that focuses on using football to promote inclusion for young people with visual impairment. Through the Voy! League, we aim to integrate disabled youth into mainstream sports activities, creating a positive and supportive environment where they can develop their skills, confidence, and friendships.

3. Nobody Offside

The Nobody Offside campaign is an initiative dedicated to promoting disability inclusion, with a special focus on supporting amputee individuals in all aspects of life, particularly in football. By collaborating with clubs and federations, we aim to eliminate the physical and societal barriers that prevent people with disabilities from engaging in sports. The project creates opportunities for amputee individuals to enjoy football in an inclusive and accessible environment, fostering empowerment and a sense of belonging.

The Importance of These Projects

These projects represent our commitment to creating more inclusive communities through the power of football. By providing individuals with disabilities opportunities to participate, compete, and grow in sports, we’re not only promoting physical activity but also enhancing social inclusion, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging.

Our initiatives are designed to challenge stereotypes, raise awareness about the capabilities of individuals with disabilities, and show how sports can be a catalyst for change. Through these programmes, we continue to work towards breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive world for everyone.

Driving Change

As we reflect on the International Day of Disabled People, we remain committed to driving change and inclusion. The Special Champions League, Voy! League, and Nobody Offside projects are only a few examples of how we are working to make the world a more inclusive and accessible place for people with disabilities.

We invite you to get involved, spread the word, and support our ongoing efforts to ensure that no one is left behind.
