International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2020

21 March 2020

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2020

March 21st is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the day in which the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid “pass laws” in 1960.

In 1979, the General Assembly adopted a programme of activities for Action to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination and organised a week of solidarity for the people struggling against racism and racial discrimination beginning on 21 March, in all states, annually.

This year, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is focused on the midterm review of the International Decade for People that are of African Descent. This is undertaken by the Human Rights Council in Geneva. This year a review will take place to overlook the progress made and to decide on further necessary actions in order to eliminate racial discrimination around the world.
