Impressions from the Football Works Tournament at P.I. Krimpen

The fifth edition of the international ‘Football Works 2021’ tournament took place on October 14th at the Penitentiaire Inrichting (PI) Krimpen and was organised together with ‘Werk via Sport’ of the DJI and European Football for Development Network. We are now sharing some of the impressions of this luckily not too rainy day.

The tournament is a platform of projects, football clubs and prisons from Europe that use football for a successful reintegration into the labour market. One of the main objectives is to inspire professional and amateur football clubs to create their own programmes for a target group that is traditionally difficult to reach. Three socially inspired professional football teams, Excelsior4AllKAA Gent Foundation and Antwerp Younited (a special collaboration between Royal Antwerp F.C. and K. Beerschot V.A.) were present. From the Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen (DJI), Stichting FC Emmen Naoberschap from PI Veenhuizen, PI Arhem and Jeff Stans Goals Inside from PI Krimpen aan den Ijssel participated. Also participating was team ‘Werk via Sport NL’. Returning participants was FC de Rebellen with Ali Bousaboun, Ruben Schaken, Gino Couthino, Patrick Pothuizen and Glenn Helder, among others. For the first time, they became tournament champions with this selection. Antwerp Younited deservedly took home the Fair Play Award.
