Huesca celebrates the “Sports Volunteering Week”

SD Huesca, through the Fundación Alcoraz, the Fundación LaLiga and the Plataforma del Voluntariado de España are organising this meeting with sport and solidarity from 6 to 9 October.

The headquarters of the Provincial Council of Huesca hosted the presentation of the ‘Sports Volunteering Week’, which took place from 6 to 9 October in different parts of the province of Huesca. A range of sporting activities which, against the backdrop of solidarity, have been specially designed to attract young people and teenagers.

This programme, developed by the La Liga FOUNDATION, the Spanish Volunteering Platform and SD Huesca, through the Alcoraz Foundation, was created with the aim of encouraging young people to collaborate and learn about volunteering in the field of sport, as well as environmental education. This programme is developed with the collaboration of the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 and the Provincial Council of Huesca.

The ‘Sports Volunteering Week’ began with the presentation of its programme of activities, with speeches by Elisa Sancho Rodellar, first vice-president of the Huesca Provincial Council; Mar Amate, director of the Spanish Volunteering Platform; Olga de la Fuente, director of the La Liga Foundation; and José Antonio Martín “Petón”, president of the Alcoraz Foundation.

“It is important to continue working on actions that promote sport in general and football in particular, as it is a powerful tool that is associated with a series of healthy habits directly related to young people, especially for the improvement of mental health, through processes such as socialisation and teamwork.”

Olga de la Fuente, director of the La Liga Foundation

“From the Volunteering Platform we have seen, over the years, that linking sport – in this case football – with volunteering, contributes to transforming reality from the School, to educate and transmit values that promote a more egalitarian, inclusive and healthy world. Solidarity can be exercised from the age of 12 and that is why it is important that children become familiar with it, through the activities that are programmed in this week of sports volunteering.”

Mar Amate, director of the Spanish Volunteering Platform

“At SD Huesca and the Alcoraz Foundation we highlight the capacity of volunteers to unite. When volunteers work, they unite, and they do it for something and for someone. In this case, the something is sport and the someone is the youngest. Volunteering unites us all in the same purpose, it is a metaphor of what we intend from the Alcoraz Foundation”.

José Antonio Martín “Petón”, president of the Alcoraz Foundation

The planned activities have started with the development of different awareness-raising workshops on sports volunteering, which are aimed at young people from the SD Huesca youth academy, as well as students from the TAFAD Training Cycle of the IES Pirámide. Between today and tomorrow there will also be a training session aimed at professionals from social entities in the region, on the link between sports volunteering and Sustainable Development Goal 3 “Health and Wellbeing”.

On Saturday 8th, the FESMAP Festival (Festival of Mental Health and the Arts) was held, with the presentation of different proposals focused on the importance of mental health care through sport. In addition, there was different cultural and sporting activities. This initiative was open to all citizens and took place in the Huesca town of Canias, with uninterrupted opening hours from 10 am to 6 pm.

To conclude the agenda, on Sunday 9, a series of recreational and sporting activities was held, adapted to all ages, with the aim of promoting healthy habits through sport, in a festive and family atmosphere. This action took place from 10am to 1:30pm at the San Jorge Sports Complex (Huesca), and included the participation of players from the SD Huesca Genuine team.
