Athletic Fundazioa set off for 2nd phase of La Liga Genuine
This week the Genuine Athletic Club Fundazioa were visited by the Athletic Club president, Aitor Elizegi, and the Foundations president, Juan Carlos Ercoreca, to wish them well before they head off this weekend to Galicia to play in the second phase of the La Liga Genuine, the official La Liga competition where each team is made up entirely of players with intellectual disabilities. Genuine Athletic Club Fundazio are the current holders of the La Liga Genuine Fair play award and the squad gathered in the dressing room to meet with both presidents who encouraged them to continue enjoying football and prioritising values over results.
The squad is made up of a selection of 16 players from people with different types of intellectual disabilities (Geu-Be, Adizmi, GAUDE, Gorabide and Down Syndrome Foundation) and Athletic Club Foundation collaborates with them as part of their social programme. As part of the overall social programme the Club also organises the Ahalegina Cup, a championship that takes place in the facilities of Lezama, the training ground and Academy of Athletic Club.
After the celebration of the first phase, LaLiga Genuine has been divided into two groups. Athletic Club Fundazioa is part of the Compañerismo Group together with SD Huesca, CF Reus, Sevilla FC, UD Almería, UD Las Palmas, Real Zaragoza, Fundación Málaga, Deportivo Alavés, RC Deportivo de la Coruña, Real Sporting de Gijón, Levante UD, SD Eibar Fundazioa and Real Valladolid.
We wish them, and all the other teams competing, all the best and hope that they enjoy the next phase of the competition.
