Football Skills Session Brings Brentford Community Together

The Trust hosted a free football skills session in partnership with LGBeeT Bees and West London Queer Project on Thursday night with over 50 people attending. Football is for everyone and to coincide with LGBT History Month the Trust and Brentford FC partnered with supporters’ group LGBeeT Bees and The West London Queer Project to host a Football 101 Skills Session for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies on Thursday night.

The free session was attended by over 50 people with participants taking part in a range of technical drills before competing in small sided games. Brentford B Team players Max Dickov and Max Wilcox were also in attendance alongside Kasey Clifford and Victory Edema from Brentford Women’s team.

Whether new to the game or lacing up boots for the first time in a while, everyone came together and enjoyed the 90-minute session. Following the skills session, a round-robin tournament was held at Gunnersbury Park on Saturday morning before the Bees played Crystal Palace at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The teams were made up of players from the skills session, West London Queer Project and LGBeeT Bees, with all the players heading to the Brentford match after.

Aubrey Crawley, Found of the West London Queer Project, said,

“Both the skills session on Thursday evening and 6-a-side games on Saturday morning were well attended and incredibly well received.

Many LGBTQ+ people find team sports, especially football, a very unwelcoming and exclusive space so I’m thrilled that together with Brentford Football Club, the LGBeeTs and Brentford Community Trust, we were able to create a safe and inclusive space for our members.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and I hope that we can continue our work together in making football a more inclusive sport.”
