First Electric Wheelchair Football project at N.E.C. Nijmegen
Together with the KNVB and Uniek Sporten, N.E.C.’s social foundation N.E.C. Maatschappelijk started Electric Wheelchair Football on Wednesday 15th of June, as the first Dutch professional football organisation.
Under the watchful eye of more than forty supporters, eight fanatical and enthusiastic children (all bound to a wheelchair) started the morning clinic. In the afternoon, another 20 children participated in this unique sport that offers people with a disability the opportunity to participate in football. N.E.C. believes in the power of football that can be widely deployed to positively change people’s lives and is proud of the fact that the club has the first electric wheelchair football project in the Netherlands.
“The project ‘Electric Wheelchair Football’ originated at N.E.C. because of a request for help from a pupil of the Sint Maartenschool.”(…) “We are already doing many valuable projects within N.E.C. Socially, such as the Special Eredivisie, a competition where young people with a disability can play football for N.E.C. It is a wonderful addition that from now on we can also help children who are attached to a wheelchair with their sporting needs. It has known great popularity in England for years and together with the KNVB, Uniek Sporten and a number of sponsors, we are now introducing this sport in the Netherlands. In September the first N.E.C. Electric Wheelchair Football Team will start training together every week for a year.”
