The Feyenoord Street League
It is one of Feyenoord Rotterdam’s targets to get people active, literally and figuratively. In order to achieve that goal, the club’s Foundation delivers a wide range of different community and social responsibility programmes belonging to the categories physical activity, health, work, education, supporters work and youth charities.
One of Feyenoord’s very successful programmes is the ‘Feyenoord Street League’.
What is the Feyenoord Street League?
The Feyenoord Street League is a street football competition for children aged between 9 to 12 years old, coming from Rotterdam’s districts Feijenoord, Charlois, IJsselmonde and Ridderkerk.
Each year, more than 350 children participate in the Street League. It is a special characteristic of the Street League that the teams do not only earn points through sportive success and thereby winning the matches, but also by showing sportive behaviour as fair play. Such behaviour is rewarded with extra points during the game. Additional points can be earned through social work activities as being active in the community and attending workshops. In that way, the children are having a positive impact on the community. In order to provide the children with support, each team is being accompanied by an adult team leader.
Matches are being played on Sunday afternoon, from 12:00 to 13:00, exceptions are made on those days, when Feyenoord is playing.
Feyenoord Street League- the referee does not only keep an eye on the match, but also assesses the teams’ attitude and behaviour. It might very well be that a team loses the match, but leaves the pitch with more points than the opponent.
