FC St. Pauli Nominated for German Sustainability Award

A specialist jury chose FC St. Pauli as a pioneer of the transformation and thus nominated it for the German Sustainability Award. The prize will be awarded in Düsseldorf in November.

Together with the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the DIHK, the German Sustainability Award (DNP) honors particularly exemplary organizations and companies in their sectors. In a first step, a jury of experts evaluates the commitment to sustainability. For the second round of the jury, the organizations can contribute their content and priorities. This procedure aims to identify organizations in all sectors that demonstrate outstanding achievements in social and ecological areas.

As a professional and amateur sports club with more than 36,000 members, FC St. Pauli is pursuing a strategy for more sustainability that goes by the motto “Not perfect, but better”. These include goals for the gradual expansion of inclusion and accessibility, zero waste and the reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2019. The club can point to concrete successes, for example in the conversion of its merchandise collection to sustainable materials, in the conversion to stadium sausages (vegan & meat) on organic quality, in broad social commitment, the focus on value-based partnerships and a large package of measures for barrier-free communication. The association’s first sustainability report, which is based on the standard of the balance sheet for the common good, will be published this year.

Franziska Altenrath heads the Strategy, Change and Sustainability department at FC St. Pauli sees the nomination as:

“A confirmation of what has already been achieved and a motivation for further, courageous steps”. What is important, however, stresses Altenrath: “Sustainability is and will remain an issue of cooperation and not of competition. We rely on exchanges with other clubs and organizations to learn and develop new ideas.”

This year, for the 16th time, the DNP is honoring groundbreaking contributions to the transformation into a sustainable future. Using the best examples, he shows how ecological and social progress can be achieved faster. For the first time, organizations in the field of sports are also recognized. In September it will be decided which nominees will be finalists. The award ceremony will take place on November 23, 2023 in Düsseldorf.

FC ST. Pauli & Football For Climate Justice

Football for Climate Justice is a groundbreaking project that brings together European football clubs, associations, and researchers to tackle one of the biggest challenges of our time: the climate crisis.

Football has the power to inspire millions of people around the world, and with that comes a responsibility to use that influence for good. That’s why we are harnessing the passion and resources of the football community to drive positive change in the fight against climate change.

Our mission is to create practical solutions that reduce the carbon footprint of football while also improving the lives of fans and their local communities. We are collaborating with leading researchers to identify the most effective ways to reduce emissions from football operations, while also exploring innovative ways to use football as a tool for social and environmental progress.

Through Football for Climate Justice, we are building a powerful network of football clubs and associations committed to making a difference, and FC ST. Pauli is proudly a part of this meaningful project.
