FC Schalke 04 football field kids explore mine
During an interactive tour, the kids from the football field project of Schalke hilft! were able to experience the extraordinary atmosphere of the training mine in the city of Recklinghausen up close on April 11th, funded by the RAG Foundation.
The rush for the 30 free places for children and young people was so great that the tour was fully booked after just a few days. Due to short-term cancellations due to illness, 26 people who were eager to learn were there. Former and active miners first provided information about the history of mining with a film. Then they were divided into two groups – 13 girls and boys in the U10 age group (6 to 10 years) and 13 in the U15 age group (11 to 15 years).
The campaign had a special character and for the first time children and young people from all 04 football pitches took part in the offer. In this way, they got to know each other better and were able to visibly strengthen the sense of community.
“It was particularly cool to be able to try out the machines for yourself underground and to know how my grandpa must have felt as a miner back then.”

With Richard Weber helping in the Schalke hilft! takes over the organization and realization of the football field project, after the tour with a group of volunteers, the children went to the Hoheward heap in pouring rain. Then, when they got to the top, there was a happy turn of events. The weather was kind and everyone was overjoyed to be able to enjoy the beautiful view over the Ruhr area – including the view of the Veltins Arena.
