Fair Play For Planet: Olympique Lyonnais shows its commitment to the environment
Olympique Lyonnais has started the Fair Play For Planet labeling process. Fair Play for Planet claims to be the first label that recognises sports clubs and events with a real commitment to the environment. Two months after the launch of Fair Play For Planet (FPFP) by former rugby international Julien Pierre, Olympique Lyonnais becomes the first professional football club to commit to this process.
Since the conception of its stadium project in the mid-2000s, Olympique Lyonnais wanted to include an environmental dimension in its development policy. Since the opening of the stadium, the OL Group has multiplied the ways of improving its impact on its direct environment by optimising the management of its infrastructures, opting for renewable energies and contributing to preserving biodiversity as much as possible. By signing up for Fair Play For Planet, Olympique Lyonnais is emphasising its desire to become more sustainably involved as part of a holistic CSR and environmental policy.
At the end of February, and in accordance with the health standards in place, COFRAC-certified experts will conduct an audit of the club in the application of the Fair Play For Planet reference framework that covers more than 300 questions, carried out in cooperation with ADEME, the ecological transition agency. The results of this audit and the club’s environmental policy will determine the level of the label that will be awarded to the club by next April. Areas for improvement may then be proposed in order to eventually be awarded the higher label and a new audit will be carried out every two years in order to keep the FPFP label.
Olympique Lyonnais becomes the 3rd player in the sports world to join the FPFP movement, after the Paloise Béarn Pyrénées Section and TVEC 85 Les Sables d’Olonne.
“This new approach by the OL Group is in line with our commitments in terms of sustainable development. Aspiring to obtain a Fair Play For Planet label is a real challenge for our sports companies, but it is also a sign that the world is changing and that professional sports players must implement everything possible at their level to support these changes towards more sustainable models”, explained Jean-Michel Aulas, President of OL.
“We are proud that OL is joining the Fair Play For Planet label. A Ligue 1 showing its commitment to the environment and make it a priority is good news for the sport and for the planet!”, said Julien Pierre, founder of FPFP.
