Everton takes part in Final of Premier League Enterprise Challenge

An ‘Everton’ team of pupils from Broadgreen International have booked their place in the Premier League Enterprise Challenge final after beating off stiff competition in the regional play-offs at Anfield earlier this week.

After winning the Everton club heats in December, Year 9 pupils Ryan, Suhil, Natnael and Berk competed against schools representing Manchester United, Burnley, Liverpool and Newcastle United and will now go forwards to represent the Blues at the final in London in April.

Premier League Enterprise Challenge encourages diversity and match experience

The Premier League Enterprise Challenge is the national competition element of the Premier League’s enterprise programme which began in 2009 and runs in partnership with Sport Relief.

The scheme sees Year 9 and 10 students set a football business-related task by Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore, which this season asked groups to come up with initiatives to encourage diversity and make going to a match the most enjoyable experience.

Now in its ninth year, over 140 schools from across the country have competed in this year’s challenge, with the competition deemed as being the strongest to date.

Held across Stanley Park at Anfield, the regional play-off was hosted by TV presenter Kim Ingles and also included workshops from Ernst & Young, one of the world’s largest professional services firms.

Presentations and Q&A sessions for the participants

In a similar style to last month’s club heats, each school was tasked to deliver a five-minute presentation where they had to sell their business idea.

Each presentation was followed by a gruelling Q&A session from the panel of judges, which included Jay Lai, financial controller at the Premier League, Shelley Alexander, editorial lead for diversity and women’s sport at BBC Sport, and Alex Gwynne, client group manager for Stonewall.

Premier League Enterprise Teams present well-researched business ideas

Whilst the competition was close, the prestigious judging panel were impressed by Broadgreen International’s well-researched business idea of developing a more diverse fanbase through a targeted community engagement strategy.

When asked what getting through to the finals meant to him, Broadgreen International pupil Ryan said: “My parents are going to be so proud.”
The students will now head to the Premier League Enterprise Challenge final in London on 22 April, where they will pitch their business idea to a new panel of judges that includes Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Theo Paphitis and ex-England international Graeme Le Saux.
