EUROPEAN FOOTBALL JOINS FORCES FOR SUPPORTER OF EACH OTHER CAMPAIGN

On the 17th of March, The European Football for Development Network (EFDN) officially launched the ‘Supporter of Each Other’ campaign. Since then, more than 90 football clubs, leagues, FAs and other organisations have joined forces to inspire players, fans, clubs, leagues, FAs and all community organisations across the world to support each other during the COVID-19 crisis.

EFDN consists of more than 90 professional football clubs, leagues and FAs who are committed to their communities and social responsibilities and have the passion to cooperate and engage on a European level. The network aims to promote the power of football as a tool for social development and support the efforts of the network members in their initiatives to use football to reach out to various target groups in their communities.

Following its philosophy, EFDN decided to start-up the ‘Supporter of Each Other’ campaign, to inform people about the activities and initiatives taken by people, players, clubs, leagues and FAs from all around Europe, including tips and initiatives to stop the further spread of the virus, to stay healthy and socially active from home and to look after each other, as well as encouraging everyone to contribute to fundraising initiatives.

Several football clubs and organisations have already joined as an official supporter, such as Everton FC, Barça Foundation, PSV Eindhoven, FC Shakhtar, Club Brugge, Red Bull Salzburg, PAOK FC, AC Sparta Praha, Rangers FC, SV Werder Bremen, Premier League, LaLiga, Swedish Football League, Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), World Football Summit, Scort Foundation, Homeless World Cup Foundation, Football Foundation for Africa and UEFA Foundation.

Our supporters have launched fundraisers, collected and donated masks and other equipment for hospitals, published digital learning resources, created online fitness programmes, supported local food banks and other charities as well as, using the reach of their communication channels to spread information and raise awareness.

Recent best practice examples across the European football landscape include:

  • Barça Foundation – raising money for COVID-19 research through finding a new sponsor for the Camp Nou
  • FC Shakhtar – donating ventilators
  • KAA Gent – delivering outdoor sports sessions in the community
  • Big Hearts – launching a COVID-19 helpline service
  • Everton FC – showing their support for the community during this difficult time via the ‘Blue Family’ campaign
  • AEK FC – raising money through special ‘We fight COVID-19’ shirt
