EITC launches dedicated female strand of Welcome Through Football
Everton in the Community has launched a female-only strand of its ‘Welcome Through Football’ project which is designed to support refugees and asylum seekers who have been relocated to Liverpool.
Moving to a new country and/or city can present many complex challenges for refugees and asylum seekers as they attempt to adapt to living in a new and unfamiliar environment whilst learning a new language and attempting to integrate into mainstream society.
The charity’s new programme is specifically available for female refugees and asylum seekers who often face issues surrounding faith, migration and gender and can suffer social inequalities in many aspects of their lives, including widespread exclusion from mainstream sport. Everton in the Community’s ‘Welcome Through Football’ programme aims to overcome these barriers – which prevent accessibility to sport – by providing a culturally sensitive kit, staff, and a suitable environment for women to participate in regular football training sessions and competitions.
The programme will promote social inclusion and celebrate cultural diversity through the vehicle of football whilst supporting female refugees and asylum seekers to settle in their communities, make new friends and learn valuable life skills.
Everton In The Community Will Also Offer Participants The Opportunity To Access:
- Health and wellbeing support.
- Education and training courses.
- Coaching and referring qualifications.
- Employment support.
- Volunteering opportunities.
‘Welcome Through Football’ is funded by the UEFA Foundation for Children and EU Erasmus+ sports and is an EFDN initiative.
The new programme has been developed and established with the help and support of Comfort Queens, Refugee Women Connect and Liverpool County FA. Comfort Queens and Refugee Women Connect help to promote the programme amongst its service users whilst Liverpool County FA help to support the delivery of the programme with opportunities for competition, training and education for the female participants.
