EFDN Members get active for Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Many EFDN Members recognised the relevance of this month and organised awareness campaigns, events or initiatives. Below, we have collected amazing best practice examples that will hopefully spread the urgent campaign and support further research.

OFI CRETE FC

For a third year in a row, OFI Crete FC paid special attention to Breast Cancer Awareness and stands next to women who battle against breast cancer, organizing a campaign called “We are all in the same team”, to raise awareness on breast cancer and highlight the importance of prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

In the home match against PAS Lamia (24/10/2021), OFI gave access to the stadium to every woman, who is interested, with a symbolic ticket price of 3 euros. All the money raised from the tickets will be given to the Hellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer “Alma Zois”.

In collaboration with a local Diagnostic Center and sponsor of the team, “Asklipios Diagnosis”, the club offers the opportunity to 15 women to undergo a free clinical breast examination.

In addition to the above, the club are planned a live session that was be broadcasted on their official YouTube channel and social media, on Friday 22nd October, in which two doctors and three breast cancer survivors (Victoria Hislop, author – Maria Polyzou, athlete – Marilou Repapi, journalist), will share their knowledge and experiences.

FC Basel 1893

Every year there are 6200 new cases of breast cancer in women and about 50 in men in Switzerland. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, FC Basel 1893 women displayed their matchday graphics in pink to raise awareness of the importance of prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Now we are at the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and the club is once again bringing the topic into focus with the auction of four exclusive FCB breast cancer shirts. The proceeds will go entirely to the breast cancer screening programme of the Basel Cancer League. As part of the programme, all women residents in the canton of Basel-Stadt and cross-border commuters between the ages of 50 and 74 are invited every two years to undergo a breast X-ray examination (mammography).
