EFDN Members Embrace Black History Month

Black History Month is celebrated annually in October to honor the contributions, achievements, and history of Black individuals. Established to spotlight Black history and culture, it offers an opportunity to recognize the impact that Black people have had across all fields, from politics and science to art and sports. The month serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and the resilience of Black communities in the face of systemic racism and discrimination, while also celebrating Black excellence and the strength of Black heritage.

In the realm of football, Black History Month provides a platform to reflect on the pivotal role Black players have played in shaping the sport. Celebrating Black History Month in football is a chance to highlight these contributions and acknowledge the challenges they faced to make the sport more inclusive for future generations.

Black History Month in football also shines a light on ongoing efforts to combat racism within the sport. These efforts emphasize that Black History Month is not only about honoring the past but also about building a future where football is a space for unity and respect. As clubs, players, and fans celebrate this month, they collectively acknowledge the profound influence of Black culture on football and reinforce the importance of striving toward a game that truly reflects diversity.

Premier League and clubs celebrate diversity for No Room For Racism

All Premier League fixtures between 19 and 27 October will be dedicated to the No Room For Racism initiative, highlighting the ongoing work the League carries out to tackle discrimination and promote diversity within football.

All 20 Premier League clubs have nominated a “No Room For Racism Icon” to highlight the contribution of Black, Asian and minority ethnic people in football and showcase the importance of diversity on and off the pitch.

The Premier League has commissioned artist Kingsley Nebechi to develop illustrations of the club nominees, which will feature across League and club channels, along with a range of content to demonstrate the impact they have made.

“One of football’s biggest strengths is its ability to bring people from diverse backgrounds together, which has a positive impact on all areas of the game.

“We are proud to celebrate individuals who represent the importance of diversity within football, including trailblazing players and inspirational club employees who set a great example to others day in, day out.

“Through our No Room For Racism Action Plan, we are committed to improving diversity across football and we will continue to work hard to show that any form of discrimination will not be tolerated.”

Richard Masters, Chief Executive at the Premier League
