EFDN and our members support World Cancer Day
February 4th– World Cancer Day is an international day which was established to raise awareness of cancer and encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. Established in 2008, World Cancer Day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration.
Here at EFDN, we would like to send our support and encouragement towards the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer this World Cancer Day. We are proud to present some of the work carried out by our member clubs, showing below their programmes and acts of support to those suffering and affected by Cancer.
NOTTS COUNTY FC – CARE
The Cancer and Rehabilitation Exercise (CARE) programme is for men and women living with Cancer. Notts County FC Football in the Community work in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to deliver this incredibly effective cancer programme.
CARE uses physical activity to help patients during their recovery from cancer. CARE provides participants with a social environment to share stories, build strength and increase their confidence and self-esteem during a difficult period in their lives.
Participants can be referred before their treatment starts, meaning they can benefit from the programme before, throughout and after their treatment. However participants are welcome to join at any time. Other programme benefits are:
- Full use of a the cardio, weights and functional gyms
- Use of the swimming pool
- Access to over 20 fitness classes
BSC YOUNG BOYS – ARCHE FONDS
Since 2015, BSC Young Boys supports “Arche Fonds”. This organisation enables children with cancer to spend one week on holiday with their families without having to let go of the necessary medical support. The families are accompanied by medical staff from a local hospital and can continue their treatments outside the hospital. The BSC Young Boys organise actions to raise money and awareness for this organisation and players visit the children during their holiday.
Due to the Corona restrictions, the traditional collection campaign in aid of the ARCHE Children’s Cancer Fund could not be carried out in 2021 as usual with the help of the YB players. However, BSC Young Boys, together with the YB fans, was once again able to support its long-standing charity partner ARCHE Fund last year, enabling children with cancer and their families to spend a week together on a medically supervised holiday at Schwarzsee. In addition, black YB gymbags and a YB audio book were available for purchase in the online shop and in the YB fan shop. YB rounded up the total proceeds from the sale of these products plus 10% of all merchandising sales in the fourth week of Advent 2021 and donated them in full to the ARCHE Fund. Since the start of the partnership ten years ago, BSC YB has already been able to transfer 275,000 Swiss francs to the ARCHE Fund.

Derby County Community Trust
Active Recovery was launched in 2017 in partnership between Derby County Community Trust and the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Trust. It aims to support those who have undergone cancer treatment to regain confidence, fitness and strength which can all be affected by chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Weekly sessions take place across Derby and are free (for 12 months) to anyone in the five years following their treatment. Activities vary and are planned to target key areas affected by certain cancers. All staff who deliver on the programme are trained at a minimum of Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation meaning they can provide advice on other aspects of recovery, including health eating and fatigue. Individuals are welcome to make self-referrals using the form below or organisations can also submit referrals on behalf of patients.
