EFDN and our members support World Cancer Day

February 4th– World Cancer Day is an international day which was established to raise awareness of cancer and encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. Established in 2008, World Cancer Day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration.

Here at EFDN, we would like to send our support and encouragement towards the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer this World Cancer Day. We are proud to present some of the work carried out by our member clubs, showing below their programmes and acts of support to those suffering and affected by Cancer.

GETAFE CF

Getafe CF one of our member clubs expressed how they want to share their encouragement to those people who struggle to overcome the effects of cancer as well as showing their encouragement towards the families, health workers and researchers who are part of the fundamental processes of moving forward.

NOTTS COUNTY FC – CARE

The Cancer and Rehabilitation Exercise (CARE) programme is for men and women living with Cancer. Notts County FC Football in the Community work in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to deliver this incredibly effective cancer programme.

CARE uses physical activity to help patients during their recovery from cancer.  CARE provides participants with a social environment to share stories, build strength and increase their confidence and self-esteem during a difficult period in their lives.

Participants can be referred before their treatment starts, meaning they can benefit from the programme before, throughout and after their treatment. However participants are welcome to join at any time. Other programme benefits are:

– Full use of a the cardio, weights and functional gyms
– Use of the swimming pool
– Access to over 20 fitness classes

BSC YOUNG BOYS – ARCHE FONDS

Since 2015, BSC Young Boys supports “Arche Fonds”. This organisation enables children with cancer to spend one week on holiday with their families without having to let go of the necessary medical support. The families are accompanied by medical staff from a local hospital and can continue their treatments outside the hospital. The BSC Young Boys organise actions to raise money and awareness for this organisation and players visit the children during their holiday.

Mainz 05 & IFT NORD – FOOTBALL FANS IN TRAINING

Obesity, inactivity and unhealthy nutrition are responsible for more than 30% of all cancerous diseases. The programme “football fans in training” aims to face these problems by providing the participants with basic information about healthy nutrition, an active lifestyle and motivational aspects.

Within the twelve-week-programme, the participants experience and learn essential knowledge about their physical health and how to improve it. The project team consists of the German cancer aid, mm sport GmbH and IFT Nord.

FC RED BULL SALZBURG – HOSPITAL VISITS

Each year, FC Red Bull Salzburg pay a Christmas visit to the Salk children’s hospital in Salzburg to deliver presents and share the festive spirit.

Coach Marco Rose, Marc Rzatkowski and mascot Bullidibumm visited the Children’s Hospital in Salzburg to give some great joy to the little patients there. They got closer to their idols than ever before.

Marco Rose & Co didn’t come empty handed and packed a few presents. There were also some words of encouragement for the children there as well as time for autographs and souvenir photos. Moreover, there was plenty of time for table football – the children really enjoyed that. Four pediatric departments were visited in total, including the cancer ward and surgical ward. There was happiness everywhere with lots of personal chats, giving everyone a boost.
