Disabled children take the stage in stadium of Werder Bremen
At the Fan Day of German Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen a very special dream came true for the Lucky Lions, a team with disabled children and adolescents. While SV Werder Bremen was competing against Villareal, the Lions played a match against the Werder Youngstars on the field of the Weser Stadium.
In the half-time break of the friendly match between SV Werder Bremen and the Spanish first division club Villarreal, the 19 children and youth players were allowed to play on the pitch of the Weser Stadium itself. Together with the Werder Youngstars, the green and white disability football team, the Lucky Lions got the chance to play a short match.
The Lucky Lions are a football team for children and adolescents with and without a disability. The team consists of 35 players and is part of the youth football department of the grassroots club SV Olympia Laxten. The young people also had the chance to take a close look at the professional players of Werder and Villareal while lining up at the entrance to the pitch before kick-off. The half-time match in front of nearly 25,000 fans was a real highlight for the children, who will certainly not forget this day anytime soon.
Opportunities for everyone
The invitation to the friendly match is part of the engagement of Werder Bremen for people with disabilities. The aim of the Werder Youngstars programme is to inspire the kids to participate in sport and physical activity and to support them according to their abilities so that they are able to participate in sports. Everyone should have the opportunity to play football as they can and should improve their motor and cognitive skills while playing. The team regularly takes part in disability and inclusion football tournaments in Bremen and the surrounding area.
