SJSP Campus Weststraat’ wins the 12th edition of the Club Brugge Cup
On Wednesday afternoon, April 24, the Club Brugge Foundation held the 12th edition of the Club Brugge Cup. As with previous years, 32 school teams from primary and special needs schools in Bruges and the neighbouring municipalities participated in the tournament which alongside the football, focuses on fair play, respect and ‘No To Racism’, Each team included at least 2 girls in their team with a view to promoting women’s football. The tournament kicked off in the afternoon with first-team players, defenders Brandon Mechele & Dion Cools doing the honours at the Club Brugge playing fields.
The final was played between ‘SJSP Campus Weststraat’ and ‘SASK’ with ‘SJSP Campus Weststraat’ coming out on top in the end. They will now represent Club Brugge at the Belgian Pro League’s National Schools Cup on Saturday 25 May 2019 to be played at KSV Roeselare’s ‘Schierveldstation’ stadium. The video below was created for the event (Note that the interviews are in Dutch).
Besides the Club Brugge Cup football tournament itself, a trophy was also handed out for fair play trophy. The teams also played with the slogan ‘No Sweat, No Glory, No Racism’ on their kits to promote an anti-racism message while there was also a supporters cup and a trophy for the best social project. The Supporters cup is awarded based on the numbers, original banners and encouragement etc of the supporters of a team.
The Club Brugge Foundation want to stimulate social engagement in the students which is why they call on class groups to develop a social project each year. The trophy for the best social project goes to the school with the best design with this year’s winners ‘POI De Steiger’ project focusing around the ‘Levensloop Koksijde-Oostduinkerke’, which is a festival event for all ages with the target of solidarity and fundraising for the fight against cancer. For the sixth year in a row they are committed to the ‘Levensloop’ campaign having raised €1.105 this year and over the six years a total of €10.000.
The feedback from around the pitches was all positive about the different initiatives “This family afternoon is very close to the DNA of the club.”, Says teacher Günther from ‘De Vaart’ primary school “The Fair-Play cup and the Best Social Project Trophy, among other things, this teaches the participating children what football is about. But also the minimum of two girls per team makes the students aware that football is not just for boys.”
