Charlton Athletic Community Trust celebrates Football vs Homophobia Month of Action
Charlton Athletic’s game against Luton Town on Saturday 22 February marked the Football v Homophobia Month of Action.
Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) were represented at the inaugural Football v Homophobia Awards on the 7th of February, as CACT Invicta, the first LGBTQI+ team to become affiliated to a professional club’s community trust, won the Grassroots Football Award, and the Club’s official LGBTQI+ supporters’ group Proud Valiants came second in the Football v Homophobia Professional Game category.
To celebrate these victories, several activities took place before, during and after Saturday match: Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, and representatives from Football v Homophobia, gave their award to Invicta, and together with former Charlton Academy graduate Osei Sankofa, also presented the Fans For Diversity Award to Proud Valiants.
A half-time penalty shootout competition took place with representatives from the teams that participated in last year’s Charlton v Homophobia tournament, and a post-match reception was hosted in the Vista Lounge.
“Allowing and creating an environment at the Club where people can come who aren’t necessarily who people associate football fans to be, and actually enjoy themselves – and a great day out – is clearly part of what we want to keep going and help to create,” said Cllr Thorpe.
